Artificially sugared drinks are not healthy for your body or metabolism. In fact, according to a journal in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, artificially sweetened beverages are not only linked with ill health effects similar to those associated with consuming regular soda – but they may even cause worse long term health outcomes. “In lots of ways, (artificial sweeteners) have been given the benefit of the doubt just because they don’t have any calories,” lead author Susan Swithers.
Swithers explains this process with sweetener intake as tasting the sugar but calories and sugar do not show up. Your body does not expect this reaction and over time you may not produce the same anticipatory responses. The results of this can cause people to over eat and have higher levels of blood sugar that could lead to type 2 diabetes, according to Swithers.
