Obesity is a huge matter of concern in the United States for American children, as well as the Hispanic community. The Hispanic population is expected to be one-third of the U.S. population and it is never too early to start working toward healthy living. A new campaign “A Day Without Sugar” has challenged kids to go through a whole day without consuming any foods or drinks with added sugar. This campaign promotes awareness of all foods that are full of sugar and is great because it helps kids identify what they are eating.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost four in 10 Mexican American children ages 6 to 11 are overweight. Forty-four percent of Mexican American adolescents — ages 12 to 19 — are overweight and almost one in four are obese. These numbers are significantly higher than those for non-Hispanic kids.
Healthy eating habits should be spread across all age groups because we are a community and our children look up to us. If they see we are trying to eat healthy they will model our behavior. Health education is also very important in conducting a healthy life and good eating habit should be set early.
