We’re gearing up to a very busy week here at #LATISM, with not one but TWO chats… and a WHOLE lot more, stay tuned for more announcements!
First chat this week: TOMORROW, Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 2pm ET: Special Chat on Latino Children Immunizations, with guests @CDCGov!
Did you know that compared with the general population, Latino children tend to have lower immunization rates and tend to play “catch-up” to the established immunization schedule? (Kaiser Permanente, 2001).
It’s true that some vaccine-preventable diseases have become very rare thanks to vaccines. However, outbreaks still happen. For example, preliminary data through late July 2012 show that more than 20,000 cases of whooping cough (pertussis) have already been reported in this country and many more cases go unreported. During this time, 9 deaths have been reported—all in children younger than 1 year of age.
Our guest, Dr. Iyabode Akinsanya-Beysolow, a Medical Officer in the National Center for Immunization & Respiratory Diseases at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) will be at hand during the chat to share information about the value of vaccines for children and to answer YOUR questions on the process, schedule, resources and more. Join us and learn all about vaccines and disease prevention!
