Last week was a definitely what you could call a banner week for LATISM: we were all over the place as we explored together new ways to merge the worlds of technology, civic engagement and on-and-offline networking with our community!
We held the First-Ever Latino Google+ Hangout On Air with the participation of representatives from the top Latino civic and media organizations: Ilia Calderón from “Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna,” Arturo Vargas, Executive Director for NALEO, Clarissa Martinez De Castro, Director of Immigration and National Campaigns for NCLR, Liliana Rañon, Director of Policy & Legislation for LULAC and Leo Pierson, Public Sociologist and contributor to The Huffington Post LatinoVoices. You can view the full discussion again at our LATISM Google+ Page.
We also launched the First-Ever Latina Blogger Retreat, an historic event that will include capacity building sessions, mentoring and [get this!] even a trip to the White House! If you haven’t applied yet to this one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, DO it NOW: The deadline for applications is this THURSDAY, MAY 10TH!! YOU KNOW YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!!
We were also honored to have been invited –for the second year in a row! – to the Cinco de Mayo Event at the White House, and you can see all the pictures from that amazing afternoon in the White House Rose Garden at Elianne Ramos’ Facebook page. You can also view pictures of our reception afterwards, organized in conjunction with our LATISM DC chapter and The Wise Latina Club at the happening DC Restaurant MIO.
On Twitter last Thursday, we held our LATISM party with Es El Momento. Watch out for our recap from a very engaging conversation about championing our children’s education, hosted by our very own chica @JulieDiazAsper and the @EsElMomento campaign from Univision.
An exhilarating week, to say the least! And to follow it up, this week we’re bringing you more unbelievable things to participate in – all in honor of Mother’s Day!
First off, TOMORROW:
We all know this week is probably tied with Christmas and New Year’s as one of the heaviest call periods in terms of volume. We also know that pre-paid calling cards are the ‘lifeline’ to those of us who still have close ties to our home cities and villages across Latin America and the world. What we may not know is that there is wide-spread fraud being perpetrated against consumers of these cards.
Tomorrow, our friends from Consumer Reports as they hold a press conference about the results of a detailed investigation into prepaid phone cards used in New York State for international calling. Our very own Ruby Wright (@RubyDW), Director of our LATISM Philly Chapter, will be live-tweeting from the Consumer Reports breakfast reception and press conference in New York City from 9 to 11:30am ET… Join us as we follow the conversation on Twitter using #LATISM!
Then at 9pm EST, we’ll host a special Twitter Chat on the very topic. Joining us will be Elena Chavez from Consumer Reports (@CREnespanol), Jorge Montalvo (@jorgeimontalvo), Special Assistant to the New York Secretary of State and Deyanira del Rio, Associate Director for the New York’s Community Economic Justice Resource Center, NEDAP (@NEDAPNYC)
We continue MOTHER’S DAY celebration on THURSDAY, during our regular LATISM party:
Join us and the good folks from Hunts as we celebrate MOTHER’S DAY como Dios manda! We’ll be discussing traditional ways to celebrate Mother’s Day a la Latina, Mom’s favorite recipes and ideas on how to make this holiday truly special for the ones who deserve it all: our Madrecitas… porque “Mamá sabe más”, we’ll be using the #mamasabemas hashtag as well as #LATISM.
Joining us will be: Hunts (@Huntschef), Venezuelan celebrity chef George Duran (@GeorgeDuranEats, also known as ‘the Ham of the Street” on Food Network), and their three star bloggers from Texas @mamacontemporanea, @mommafindings and @simpledelicioso
I’ll be posting more details about both parties in a bit. In the meantime, SAVE THE DATES!!
