The Census is out – Now use it

Gone are the days when census data were managed by the academic elite. Today, everyone including you and me can have access to the data collected in the country only 24 hours after the state leaders receive it. Let’s keep an eye out for the next months while the state data is revealed.

So far the following states have been released:

Arkansas
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Louisiana
Maryland
Mississippi
New Jersey
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Texas
Vermont
Virginia

The following states are next:

Alabama
Colorado
Hawaii
Missouri
Nevada
Oregon
Utah
Washington

I know we get all excited about the census and the Hispanic population.  Yes, that’s really important.  However it’s not the only way we can use the data.  Here are some ideas I found around on how to use the census:

Study your industry:

  • Gauge the competition
  • Calculate market share

Study business markets

  • Locate business markets
  • Locate distributors or resellers
  • Identify site location
  • Design sales territories and set sales quotas

Evaluate investment opportunities

  • Evaluate new business opportunities
  • Enhance business-opportunity presentations

Public sector

  • Public policy and statistics
  • Maintain local tax base
  • Assist local businesses
  • Research
