Reading about HB2281 without putting it in the proper political context, one may be tempted to think of it as a rather inconsequential law. Place it within the context of the on-going anti-immigrant sentiment in Arizona and you could get the bigger picture in the minds of its enactors: pushing [...]
Source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary While hardly homogeneous, as Latinos we do share a broad range of experiences and legacies brought down from our ancestral culture. Living in the US, for many of us, means we have learned to celebrate the diversity of our multi-generational and recently arrived immigrant Latino [...]

Yesterday, the U.S. Congress announced that it is postponing action on the Stop Online Piracy Act [SOPA] and the Protect IP Act [PIPA]. In case you’ve been living under a rock, these are not your ma‘s tasty SOPA, or your abuelito‘s PIPA. While defenders of these laws argue that they [...]

Guest Post by Juan Alanis (@JuanOfWords) They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Well, I’d beg to differ. Having grown up with a mamá Latina I know all to well and am all too familiar with the coraje and conviction in a madrecita’s punishments. Not that I [...]

When it comes to our Latino Identity… I’m sure we all have questions like these from time to time: Am I Dominican/Mexican/Salvadorian/fill-in-the-blank? Am I an Alien? Guest Post by Reynaldo Macías (@ReynaldoMacias) “Social Media” conjures up a variety of thoughts and images: kids hunched over their smartphones in groups, not speaking to each other but laughing about the text they are sharing; teenagers or college students snapping pictures of each other, posed and unposed, and uploading [...]
Dare I say it, the search for progress, for better life conditions, is almost as part of the human DNA as the need for food and shelter. Thus, the idea of sending your kids to college (or attending it yourself) is undoubtedly a huge social motivator. The promises of obtaining [...]
The topic of education tends to bring out the passionate side of Latinos in social media… and last night’s Twitter party was certainly no exception (Just look at the record-breaking numbers below = 16, 602, 555 impressions!). Can I hear you say WEPA?!?!?! With so many issues surrounding Education as [...]

With 18 percent of Latinos online using Twitter and 54.2 percent of Latinos online using Facebook, we can pretty much say it’s a fact: Latinos are definitely hooked on social media! Having a strong sense of our place in this country and within our own culture, we – particularly those [...]
Guest Post By Cheryl Aguilar (@cheryl_aguilar) If you think you need to be a social media or new media professional to join the renowned LATISM’11 social media conference in Chicago this November 9-11, you are about to be enlightened. Read along to learn how social media has allowed a community [...]
Just as plants and fruits can be combined in a way that captures both their strengths, two cultures, perspectives and or technologies can be combined in a hybrid that leverages the most effective aspects of both ways of doing things. To give a classic example: Our Latino ethnicity – a [...]
While the rest of us are out here tweeting our hearts out, the Latino gliteratti is getting ready to gather for a night of celebration of our Latino sabor! The Latin Grammys, the biggest night in Latin music, is set for next week -Nov. 10 at the Mandalay Bay Events [...]
Now! How do you take advantage of LATISM’11? Here are five ideas:
1) Set a clear goal: And by clear I mean a concious decision to make something big happen during those three days. If you know well in advance what that goal will be, it will become easier for you to make a strategy and make it happen.
2) Plan carefully: By now you know all the business/political/media leaders who will be participating. You also know the brands and organizations that will be officially there (plus I can tell you that all the brands that care about the Latino community will be attending).
Our LATISM 11 Conference begins tomorrow, and the excitement is brewing here at LATISM headquarters! Hundreds of influential Latinos from every walk of life and every part of the country will be convening at the Navy Pier in Chicago tomorrow for a sold-out event that will provide attendees a platform [...]
I’m still overwhelmed with a ton of feelings, emotions and excitement right after LATISM’11. After every conference I can’t help but reflect around my favorite moments, the areas that could improve and the typical surprises (those details that exceeded my expectations despite of my many imperfections). Regardless of how tired we were, all the volunteers felt compelled to stick together, to unwind, to share, to LOL, to confirm our commitment to the movement, to share feedback and already improve LATISM’12. I can only say Gracias!
With all the talk about Latinos’ purchasing power and high-speed growth, the switch from a homogenous workplace to one much more diverse or multicultural still has a long way to go. According to the 2010 Corporate Diversity report, published last year by the office of Senator Robert Menendez, “when you [...]
Last week, I went over my top 5 moments of the conference. When we asked the community on the survey, all 410 shared aspects that were expected, but also little details that never caught my attention. In order to pay tribute to all, I’ll mention every moment here in picture, words or video. Here’s what the community said:
“The Johnson & Johnson’s video suite was great. I loved their focus on using social media for social good”
The Awards Gala at LATISM’11 was a top favorite among so many attendees. It gave so many bloguer@s and hard working professionals a feeling of achievement! We thank Toyota for giving us such an amazing opportunity. We received so many feedback about the evening on the post-conference survey and I wish I could mention them all.
You come to a conference on the first night full of anxiety, fears, expectations and butterflies in the stomach. The first impression was key to the success for LATISM’11. This was thanks to the amazing welcome reception launched by Sears Holdings. It was so elegantly put together. I was hoping that attendees payed attention to all the little details. The calming music after a long trip, the fabulous food, the Noche Buena decorations, the models, the table arrangements and so many other detallitos that made it perfect for the Bienvenida.
At a time when the economy is shrinking, job security is non-existent and unemployment rates seem ever-expanding, becoming your own boss has turned into the go-to choice for a big segment of the population. The perks of self-employment, such as independence of working at your own pace and turning one’s [...]
In our effort to open up civic engagement opportunities for all Latinos, LATISM is sharing this special invitation from the White House to our bloggers, members and friends in the Miami, FL area. LATISM Board member Giovanni Rodriguez (@GioRodriguez) and South Florida Chapter Directors Ernesto Sosa (@ernestososa) and Blanca Stella [...]
Guest Post by Juan Alanis (@JuanOfWords) We went. We listened. We learned. And we conquered at LATISM’11, last month! From the very beginning, as soon as we walked in the door, it was a learning experience and everywhere we went there was an opportunity to soak in new, and very valuable, information. [...]
Given the resonance of the topic for our community it is not surprising at all that our LATISM tweeps would be all over it. After all, who doesn’t want to be El Jefe [or La Jefa, for that matter]? Unlike previous discussions we’ve had about the topic, last night’s chat [...]
I just watched the interview conducted by José Cardénas from Horizonte with the Joe Ray, LATISM Phoenix Director and Co-Director Eric Diaz. They made our Cyber familia very proud with their expert knowledge of the Hispanic market. The part I liked the most was when Joe said: “LATISM feels like you have all these crazy cousins in every city of the USA”.
This week we’ll announce the Webminars on the LATISM’11 workshops in case you missed it. We’ll also start the Bloguinaldos followed by the Blog Posadas. On Thursday the LATISM party will be about education with a very special guest. Save the date.

Tonight, Friday, December 9th the @Toyota party will continue, but this time we’ll add social good to the conversation. @Toyota PriusV has partnered with the Toys for Tots Foundation (#ToysforTots) and they’re giving away toys to needy families. There’s plenty of room in the back of that PriusV to share with families this Holiday season, y esta noche lo vamos a llenar! That’s right, let’s fill up that car, and those toys will be donated to Toys for Tots Foundation, how wonderful is that!
9pm EST, tonight, join the LATISM party, use the #ToyotaTips hashtag along with our LATISM hashtag and let’s fill up that PriusV!!
I am happy to introduce you to this amazing video made by Rob Halper from Johnson & Johnson as the LATISM’11 conference recap! no need for fancy explanations, just watch it and judge by yourself. Make sure you add your comments on the video and show him some love. On Friday, Join us for LATISM-NY’s last event of the year: The 5th Annual Pa’l Pueblo Event (Toy Drive) and Holiday Party
Guest Post by Christina Elizabeth Rodríguez (@kikisbetes) Latinos are passionate people.
